There are many cross – roads in History when people put everything on the line to preserve their community. In 480 B.C., a small group of Spartans held the Thermopylae pass against a massive Persian army for three days. They put their lives on the line for freedom. Herodotus said, “Here they defended themselves to the last, those who sill had swords using them, and others resisting with their hands and teeth.” They did this to defend their community.
Our freedom is a gift. It was given by whom? Freedom is a deed executed and given without any expectation of return. There’s never been a legal contract given with the expectation that we would preserve our freedoms. The Legacy of freedom suggests a moral obligation to respect the intended purposes of the gift. How secure are the freedoms that we have inherited? Ronald Reagan said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”
The social scientist, Alexis de Tocqueville, said, “The art of association is the first law of democracy.” He goes on to say, “It is the mother of all forms of knowledge. If men are to remain civilized or to become civilized, the art of association must develop.” People are flocking to community because of the solutions it provides. The foundations of freedom have always come from the bottom up. Think about how LIFE has made a difference? I’m hearing improvements in relationships, parenting, marriage, children’s self esteem and school performance, finances, and, last but not least, a strength in people’s faith. People have come to realize that many of their challenges come from the confusing information they have received. An example is the class warfare orchestrated by politicians creating division among people. Community solves this. Another example is the media brainwashing that goes under the umbrella of repetitive news, stories that have no relevance to our immediate condition. Community solves this. Political party polarization caused people to lose track the real issues. Community solves this. People are being taught the new religion of atheism and relativism. Community solves this.
The community becomes stronger, not from external forces, but by personal commitment to excellence. People are resolved to take a challenge to improve in the areas that matter, from the bottom up. Honesty replaces dishonesty. Courage replaces cowardice. Compassion replaces apathy. Dignity replaces degradation. Liberty replaces bondage. Taking the mental fitness challenge is not just for Americans, it’s for human beings.
Freedom has always been on a thin thread. It’s been a cause worth crying for. The cry of Hosea 4:6 can be heard today, “My people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge, “A commemorative stone was placed on the burial mound where the three hundred Spartans lay, “Stranger, report this word, we pray, to the Spartans, that lying here in this spot we remain, faithfully keeping their laws.”
Will we take the challenge?
