Jesus & Discipleship

Notes taken from Robbie Gallaty’s talk on Discipleship.

  • Disciple
    • Dynamic term – pursuing action
      • A return to biblical discipleship
      • Wield God’s Word & invest in the people of God for the glory of God
        • A biblical model/pattern
        • Matthew 28:19
          • 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing Disciplesthem in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
            • “Teach” vs. “Make Disciples”
        • Ephesians 4:11-13
          • 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (NIV UK)
          • 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: (King James)

            • Label
              • Mentors
                • The Mentee MUST become a Mentor
                • The Player MUST become a Coach
                  • Anything else is simply a static bible study (which are good & needed – but are we passing Spiritual Maturity onto others?)
              • Ministry
                • Jesus ministered to the
                  • 1. Large Crowd
                  • 2. Corporate Gathering
                  • 3. Apostles (90% of His time) to the 12
                  • 4. Core Group: James, John & Peter (a large portion of that 90%) – reproducible/duplicatable
                  • 5. 2 Timothy 2:2 (others also)
              • Maturity: Ministry is the pathway to maturity
                • The pastor doesn’t  do it all – they equip others (apostles)
                • Build disciples…NOT a church
                • We can’t expect from others what we’re not doing ourselves
        • 2 Timothy 2:2
          • And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
            • 5 generations
            • You don’t have to advertise a fire…it advertises itself
          • Why is “bible study” alone not enough?
            • Because, to the undisciplined, we think that God’s standards are too tough to live up to AND we know he’ll forgive us if we slip or divert from the path. But with men, sitting across the table in a diner or in a group (Band of Brothers), we have look-you-in-the-eye accountability as well as a model of “if i can do it, you can do it” behavior.
            • Therefore: Message & Model (speak & DO) the results you want.
  • Comparisons:
    • The temple veil was torn immediately after Christ’s death on the Cross – like the rending of one’s clothes in anguish.
    • Isaac, the son, carrying the wood for the sacrificial fire on his shoulders – like Christ (Son) carrying His own cross.
